Shows the fun I&#8217;ve been having with the E702\/E703\/E704<br \/>\ntrilogy of terror.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stjohn.openbar.com\/airplane\/images\/10-26-06\/IMG_2241.JPG\"\nThis is the point of failure.. it's difficult to see, but the web is cracked between the hole and the corner of the flange.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stjohn.openbar.com\/airplane\/images\/10-26-06\/IMG_2245.JPG\"\nSo I cut the flange off and scotchbrited away enough metal for a smooth end, past the\noriginal drilled holes.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stjohn.openbar.com\/airplane\/images\/10-26-06\/IMG_2246.JPG\"\nHere is the new angle\/doubler that is going to take the place of the flange on E-702 and the one on E-703 that was supposed to get riveted to E-702.  In the upper part  of the shot, you can see E-703, with the aft flange cut off as well.  The radiused bend in the doubler was easy. Clamped it down in the hand seameras far as I needed and bent it against the surface of the workbench.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stjohn.openbar.com\/airplane\/images\/10-26-06\/IMG_2247.JPG\"\nthis is where it's going to go.  The angle, once riveted to E-702, will then be riveted to the E-703 and E704 ribs.  I've checked all this for fit, and I'm able to get a longeron yoke in ther to put it all together.  I made one for the back side that points the other direction, but I figure that's overkill.  I'm pretty sure the skin is going to be taking the lion's share of the stress here, so I'm not worried about it.  I'll send this page to Van's just to see what they say, but my gut is they'll be OK with it.  The doubler is made out of a spare HS-702 I ordered a while back.  Took me a long time to file it down to this size and shape.  Kidding.  Really.\nI have some smileys on the E-702 that I need to sand out, just so they don't become structural issues later.  At least I hope i can sand them out.. Then I have to re-prime the end of E-702 and I can rivet this bad boy together.  I doubt I'll get to it before the DD Halloween party, since I don't have a costume yet and I doubt I'll see much of the garage on Sunday except to change out loads of laundry.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>.5 hours.
