{"id":4523,"date":"2015-02-05T23:43:07","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T23:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stjohn.openbar.com\/airplane\/?p=4523"},"modified":"2015-02-05T23:43:07","modified_gmt":"2015-02-05T23:43:07","slug":"annual-inspection-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stjohn.openbar.com\/airplane\/?p=4523","title":{"rendered":"Annual Inspection 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Believe it or not, it&#8217;s been a year since 313TD was given its special airworthiness certificate. \u00a0 In that year, I&#8217;ve put 65 hours on it, which is respectable. \u00a0 But alas, no matter the hours, the regs say you have to do an annual inspection.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t bother posting the whole list of items checked, but I did find a few things I wasn&#8217;t terribly happy about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throttle cable got a little too close to the exhaust. \u00a0Operation seems fine, but the plastic wrap is bubbled slightly where the heat-wrap runs out. \u00a0 It also chafes against the fuel pump. \u00a0 I wired up a fix, we&#8217;ll see if it stays.<\/li>\n<li>The wires going into the lower rudder cover are a little chafed. \u00a0 Wrapped &#8217;em up good.<\/li>\n<li>Left side fuel vent line fitting was loose. \u00a0Blue residue inside the wing root fairing.<\/li>\n<li>The screws holding the spinner on were crap. \u00a0Two of them stripped out and had to be removed via drill. \u00a0Replaced all with 6\/32 stainless.<\/li>\n<li>Stripped out a mag screw. \u00a0Why do they make those things with Torx fittings? \u00a0 Suck it, Slick Aircraft. \u00a0 I was able to drill off the screw and replace it with a slotted one like it&#8217;s supposed to have.<\/li>\n<li>Fuel hose from throttle body to injection spider was loose at the spider. \u00a0 That&#8217;s the only really scary one. \u00a0But this is what inspections are for.<\/li>\n<li>Left aft wheel pant cracked. \u00a0 I think I may have jammed a chock under it a little too hard at some point. \u00a0I have to fix this over the weekend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To do the job, I rented some floor space from Andre over at Bill&#8217;s Air Center. \u00a0 Once I got in, I was able to do the job in 3-4 hour chunks, using \u00a0mostly my own tools. \u00a0 \u00a0 The guys there are awesome! \u00a0 It really helps to have several master aircraft mechanics occasionally looking over your shoulder and helping you out with the hard stuff. \u00a0 But really, most of the pain is dealing with access panels. \u00a0 So many screws. \u00a0 \u00a0I have a few things left, but mostly I wanted to get out of the shop and give Andre his floor space back. \u00a0 \u00a0Here&#8217;s what&#8217;s left:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adjust Idle. \u00a0 This is the biggest one. \u00a0 I re-timed the mags, and it looks like they&#8217;re better than the last time I did them, plus with a set of clean plugs, the engine runs way better. \u00a0 Problem is, the idle is about 200rpm too high, and it stumbles a bit on throttle advance. \u00a0 I suspect this is because of the change in timing.<\/li>\n<li>Fix wheel pant. \u00a0 Without this, I can&#8217;t fly. \u00a0 That happens ASAP.<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall interior. \u00a0 I took most of it out and left it at home while I was working. \u00a0 Seemed like the smart thing to do.<\/li>\n<li>Fix o-ring on right fuel drain. \u00a0Fuel leaks are not cool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also fixed a couple of things that were annoying me, like the canopy latch being too tight to allow smooth operation.<\/p>\n<p>So once I get my to-do&#8217;s done, I&#8217;ll make a logbook entry certifying its airworthiness and take it for a test flight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Believe it or not, it&#8217;s been a year since 313TD was given its special airworthiness certificate. \u00a0 In that year, I&#8217;ve put 65 hours on it, which is respectable. \u00a0 But alas, no matter the hours, the regs say you have to do an annual inspection.
